Screen Two

(BBC drama strand, 1985-2002)

Episode 2.04: Frankie and Johnnie:
A brief view of Victoria Coach Station, featuring two Plaxtons, two MCW Metroliners, a Duple Caribbean and a Duple Laser:
sc2frankie1.jpg

Episode 3.01: Coast to Coast:
1987 drama stars Lenny Henry, then best known as a comedian, and John Shea of 'New Adventures of Superman' and 'Mutant X' fame. Opening scenes show Shea aboard the 'Beatles Magical Mystery Tour' in Liverpool. The Bedford VAL/Plaxton coach in question appears to be the original coach from the Magical Mystery Tour movie, URO913E:
coacoa1.jpg coacoa2.jpg coacoa3.jpg

Episode 4.06: Love Birds:
1988 drama features this Leyland Atlantean/Roe in a chase scene. The registration is unclear, but I believe it's from the LUGxxxP batch, an AN68/1R new in 1975:
sc2lovebirds1.jpg

Episode 4.07: Shadow on the Earth:
1988 entry about children in a small Scottish mining town shows them travelling on a Bristol Lodekka/Eastern Coachworks in SMT livery. I'd speculate this might be Scottish Omnibuses AA620 (OWS620), a 1957 LD6G:

sc2shadowe3.jpg sc2shadowe4.jpg

Episode 4.09: The Temptation of Eileen Hughes:
Another show from 1988; the footage is of poor quality, but this appears to be Armchair B410CMC, a 1985 Plaxton-bodied Bedford YMP:
sc2tempt1.jpg sc2tempt2.jpg
I'm open to offers on this coach seen at Heathrow Airport as a Boeing 747 takes off in wet weather:
sc2tempt3.jpg

Episode 5.02: Angel Voices:
Used for transport to Blackpool by a choir is Wilkinsons of Sedgefield 54 (654BUP), a 1959 Plaxton-bodied Leyland Tiger Cub PCUC1/2:
sc2angelv1.jpg sc2angelv2.jpg sc2angelv3.jpg
Before leaving it's parked next to a Wallace Arnold Burlingham Seagull-bodied Tiger Cub from the xxxxU batch - we only see the 'U', so it's not possible to definitively identify it:
sc2angelv4.jpg
In Blackpool we see trams:
sc2angelv5.jpg sc2angelv6.jpg sc2angelv7.jpg
This partly seen Albion may or may not be a bus:
sc2angelv8.jpg

Episode 5.05: Leaving:
1989 drama makes brief use of preserved Western Scottish 1684 (RCS382), a 1961 Leyland Titan PD3A/3 with lowbridge Alexander bodywork:
leaving1.jpg leaving2.jpg leaving3.jpg

Episode 6.07: Sometime in August:
Set in Edinburgh and features three separate journeys by bus in the first quarter of an hour. The first is only seen as the interior of a Lothian Transport Leyland Atlantean:
somaug01.jpg somaug02.jpg
The second concerns two schoolboys boarding Lothian Transport 942 (OSF942M), a 1974 Leyland Atlantean/Alexander. This bus differed from its sisters in being fitted with an SCG 5 speed gearbox instead of the standard 4 speed. Perhaps that's how it came to be used for filming:
somaug03.jpg somaug04.jpg somaug05.jpg
The third features Lothian 722 (A722YFS), a 1983 Leyland Olympian/Eastern Coachworks:

Episode 6.08: Small Zones:
Broadcast in 1990 and starring a young Sean Bean, this drama entwines the stories of a woman in an abusive relationship in Hull and a Russian poet serving hard labour. The Hull footage features trips on an AEC Routemaster of East Yorkshire Motor Services, in that operator's distinctive dark blue and primrose livery, which was revived when the company bought Routemasters to compete with Kingston upon Hull Transport. This particular example was London Transport's RM732 (WLT732), seen first in daylight and then at night:

smallzones03.jpg smallzones04.jpg
smallzones05.jpg smallzones06.jpg
Towards the end, as Jenny (Catherine Neilson) makes her escape from her husband by travelling to London, we see an even more striking Routemaster, RM1741 (741DYE), which was bought by the shortlived Citilink company from Magicbus in 1988. Citilink had two RMs, but this was the only one painted in fleet livery:
smallzones07.jpg smallzones08.jpg smallzones09.jpg
She crosses in front of the bus station, where Kingston upon Hull Leyland Atlanteans are seen, also the rear of a Dennis Dominator:
smallzones10.jpg smallzones11.jpg smallzones12.jpg
She finally boards East Yorkshire 20, a Duple 340 bodied Leyland Tiger in National Express Rapide livery. In the background can be seen an East Yokshire Bristol VRTSL3/Eastern Coachworks:

As 20 heads for London it passes a line of parked Kingston upon Hull Leyland Atlanteans:
smallzones15.jpg smallzones16.jpg

Episode 7.08: Morphine and Dolly Mixtures:
From 1991. Featured in two scenes, one day, one night, is former Cardiff Corporation 46 (EBO900), a 1949 lowbridge Alexander-bodied Crossley DD42/7:
morphd1.jpg morphd2.jpg

Episode 7.11: They Never Slept:
Also from 1991. In a scene set in the Second World War, a young woman is knocked down by preserved London Transport STL441, a 1934 AEC Regent/LPTB:
sc2theynever1.jpg

Episode 8.02: Flea Bites:
Looks at the relationship between a young boy and an elderly Polish emigre. It's set in Nottingham, and one sequence features this Alexander bodied Scania N113DRB:
fleabites1.jpg fleabites2.jpg fleabites3.jpg

Episode 8.07: Truly Madly Deeply:
The best known of the Screen Two episodes: “Michael Maloney is shepherding children with learning difficulties from the lower deck of an AEC Routemaster, and talks to Juliet Stevenson through the window” (thanks Seb). It's RM969 (WLT969) with 253 to Kings Cross wound up:
tmd1.jpg tmd2.jpg
Interesting close up of the winding mechanism on a Routemaster window, in fact, as Stevenson winds the window down and allows Maloney to write his telephone number on her hand!
tmd3.jpg tmd4.jpg

Episode 9.06: The Cormorant:
1993 episode set in Snowdonia. In a bus station scene in Caernarfon, the departure of a National Express Rapide coach is barely seen, but we do see assorted Crosville Leyland-National Bs and Bristol VRTSLs. A blue/cream Duple coach is not identifiable:

sc2corm4.jpg sc2corm5.jpg sc2corm6.jpg
sc2corm7.jpg sc2corm8.jpg

Episode 10:05: O Mary This London:
Three young Dubliners head for London. Their transport is this Scania K113/Van Hool in the livery of Slattery's Coaches of Tralee, K724EHE:
sc2omary1.jpg
Amid London traffic we see several AEC Routemasters:
sc2omary2.jpg
A glimpse of a coach promoting a service from London to Southend via Basildon:
sc2omary3.jpg
Also seen are a Volvo B10M-50/Alexander of Grey Green on route 24 passing an AEC Routemaster, and a London Buses T-class Leyland Titan:
sc2omary4.jpg sc2omary5.jpg

Episode 10.06: Dirtysomething:
Two New Age Travellers get drawn into a suburban lifestyle. Briefly seen is former Southern Vectis 119 (PDL514), a 1958 Bristol MW/Eastern Coachworks, as a mobile home:
dirtysomething1.jpg

Episode 10.12: Sin Bin:
A 1994 episode includes an outing from a mental hospital. The Plaxton-bodied coach used carries registration BUC759T and the 'Clansman' fleetname, but I've not been able to trace this:
sc2sinbin1.jpg sc2sinbin2.jpg sc2sinbin3.jpg

Episode 12.03: Streetlife:
1995 episode set in the Welsh Valleys. This interior is not identifiable:
sc2streetlife1.jpg
This is a Rhondda Buses Optare MetroRider:
